Had you guessed Iceland you would be wrong. Internet is a word, however, Iceland is beginning to play a bigger role in the internet.
Nothing quite says comparative advantage like moving all of the world’s cloud servers to Iceland. Why would you do this? The perfect mix of ice, fire and water is why.
Iceland has an abundance of ‘clean’, carbon-free power due to its geothermal and hydroelectric power plants. It also has a very cool climate with an average high of 7°C. These things make it the perfect home for the world’s cloud servers.
Primarily, servers require power and cooling. The cooling traditionally comes from AC, which in turn requires more power. Iceland plans to just open the windows instead and run the plant of its renewable energy. Will Iceland be the next land of the cloud?
Joseph Stromberg of the Smithsonian magazine runs through the ins and outs of this idea and those companies that have already moved to the intrepid north.
